Depression in women is more common now

Depression affects women and men differently and the impact on both genders usually has varied implications. Not only are women more likely to falling into depression trap than men, but the causes and symptoms are often different from that of men. However, familiarizing yourself with what causes depression and spot the symptoms will heal and cure depression quicker.

Depression is an illness that can have negative effects on all aspects of your life. Depression, if not cured at the right time, can impact your social life, your family relationships, your career and even worse your self-esteem. If you feel sad, guilty, tired, you may suffer from depression. This is something that is not uncommon in women. Approximately 12 million women in the United States experience depression each year. Approximately one in eight women can expect to experience depression in their lifetime.

The number of women suffering from depression is twice as much when comparing male patients. Another thing that should be noted is that depression is common in most of the developed countries. Several theories attempt to explain this large discrepancy to find out why depression is so prevalent among females.

Why are women more prone to depression than men?

It is generally believed that women are more prone to depression than men. There are several theories on what factors cause depression in women while men usually get away with even the toughest times.  

Unlike men, women like to share their feelings with others. Another important factor is that women think too much, which causes them to experience a variety of emotions. While men like to deal with their feelings on their own, most of the times. This is of course only one side of the story.

Hormone           

Hormonal changes in women play a huge role. Hormonal changes cause huge mood swings. A woman during her menstrual feels different, more depressed, or irritable most of the times. While in men, hormonal changes make them more stable and strong mentally. In women, hormones continue to go through a change -- during menstrual cycle, after pregnancy and during menopause.

Self-Image

Admit it or not, women worry about their self-image more than men do. The position of women in society has seen a radical change in the 21^st century. The expectations from them have increased a lot in recent years. Now women not only have to raise kids, they have to perform better at workplace too. Working among men and trying to compete others often leave women mentally confused and shaken. A renowned psychologists is quoted as saying “those successful women featured in magazines and on television can easily influence your behavior and mood. Whether you like them or not.”

Relationships

Relationships are another factor that influence women’s mood and behaviour. Bad relationships are behind about fifty percent of women suffering from depression. Women are generally more concerned about how their relationship with partner is going than men and this is what puts them under radar.

An important impact of depression, which has been shared by psychologists, is that the affected person finds themselves worthless and expendable. 

Depression: Factors and its impact on person

There has been a lot of research on causes of depression. Causes and effects of depression vary from person to person. Sometimes it is easy to find the actual cause, but sometimes it gets hard to assess what has caused depression in a person.

Facing depression can be a disturbing experience, but it should not be, if you take corrective measures at the right time. Depression may happen soon after an event (mostly a memorable one), but it can also be the outcome of past or grief. Genetic factors should be taken into account while treating a depression patient. Specialists find it rather a combination of factors: biological, social and psychological factors.

Biological factors

Your mood is determined by a variety of processes in your body and by substances such as hormones and neurotransmitters. The latter provides the electrical impulses between the brain cells. Serotonin and norepinephrine are two neurotransmitters associated with depression. Deficiency of one or both of these substances plays a big role in causing depression. Many diseases can alter your mood and cause depression.

Social factors

Dreadful or miserable events are the chief social factors. Moreover, negative response form others may also play a big role in causing depression in person. Isolation, bad treatment at home, bullying, unemployment can leave a devastating impact on any stable-minded person. Work load at workplace usually leaves a person in a tight spot, plus pressure from higher-ups stifles happiness, growth and willingness to work. 

Pregnancy at older age ensures longer life, research shows

Women who give birth to babies after 33 years of age, live longer, an American research shows. 

The research says if women in early 30s are still be able to give birth to babies they have much better chances to live longer than women who can't have babies after their 30s.

Pregnancy in older women is a clear sign that they are ageing slower than those having lost their ability to give birth to babies.

That American researchers gathered information and data from Long Life Family Study -- a genetic study of families.

The scientists worked on 462 women the age at which they had their last child and assessed how old these moms had become.
